One Fabric, Five Ideas: #4 Applique Hoodie

You may remember that way back before Thanksgiving I started a little series called One Fabric, Five Ideas. I challenged myself to create five different Christmas items using five different images from one piece of fabric. I shared my first three ideas, the embroidery hoop Christmas ornament, the gift card holder ornament, and the cocoa cozy. Here comes idea number four...

It's a Christmas applique hoodie! This one is so easy I feel like I'm cheating. I bought a red fleece hoodie at Target for $4.00 and embellished it with a gingerbread applique and a Christmas ribbon zipper pull. Quick and easy but super sweet for my little ten-month-old daughter's first Christmas.

Just to recap for my new readers (or in case you can't remember that far back :), here's what my challenge fabric looks like...

And these are the five fabric circles I chose to use in my challenge. Today I'm using the gingerbread man...

Materials and supplies to make one Christmas applique hoodie:

  • Christmas fabric
  • plain hoodie
  • fusible web (I used Wonder Under.)
  • ribbon (about 4")
  • thread

Instructions:

First, cut a small piece of fusible web and iron it onto the back of your Christmas fabric. Make sure it covers the back of the entire image you want to cut out (in this case, the entire circle with the gingerbread man image). Do this before you cut out your circle. After it cools, cut around the 3" circle.

Lay your hoodie out in front of you. Peel the fusible web paper from the back of your Christmas fabric circle, and place this circle on the upper right chest of your hoodie. You will now iron it in place, but first a word of caution... fleece does not withstand high temperatures! Use a low temp on your iron and also use a press cloth. You will regret it if you don't! OK... iron in place.

Applique your Christmas fabric circle onto your hoodie by sewing a straight stitch about 1/8" from the edge all the way around.

It will look something like this when you are done...

You could add some more embellishments to the applique now if you want, like sewing on some cute buttons, but I figured I should leave choking hazards off of this one since everything those little hands touch goes right in the mouth.

Next up is the ribbon zipper pull. Take a piece of ribbon about 4" long and slip one end through the hole at the end of your zipper pull. Bring the two ends of the ribbon together, decide how long you want the ribbon pull to be, and sew back and forth across the ribbon a few times.

Trim off the ends of the ribbon near your stitches, and you're done! It doesn't get much easier than that!

Now my cutie has a warm little Christmas sweatshirt to celebrate the season! Look at that chunk-a-munk in her plaid flannel pants...

That's four projects from one fabric. I have one more project to go in this series, and I'll be posting it later this week. Thanks so much for stopping by today! Hope your holiday season is merry and bright!

I'm linking up...
