Work In Progress: Central Park Baby Quilt

My brother and his wife are expecting a little girl in mid-June, and I decided that I am going to make a baby quilt as a shower gift for my sister-in-law. I chose Central Park by Kate Spain for Moda. I'm going to be using the Charm Pack Baby Quilt tutorial from Kristin over at wRIte iT DOwN, but I'm going to make mine slightly larger. The baby shower is in three and a half weeks, so I need to get moving on this. So far all I've managed to do is lay out the charm squares how I want them.

I don't have the fabric for the back or the binding yet. I need to order it pretty quickly, but I wanted opinions on binding color because I'm having trouble deciding. I'm thinking dark purple. What do you think?

Love the way you've done the layout of the squares! I say use dark purple. I've made a handful of quilts and still haven't tried binding. I always do the pillowcase method. I think I'm just intimidated by binding. I've got a small doll quilt top done and I should just go ahead and practice on that one.

Thanks for the nudge!
Can't wait to see your finished quilt!

LOVE IT! I really like the dark purple idea (especially the print second from the bottom on the right - small dark purple.) I really like the turquoise from that line too. What did you pick for the backing?

I cannot wait to see it all done! Kristin

Love all of the fabric you are using Gwen - it's going to be such a cute quilt! I agree - I think dark purple would be perfect.

I'm sure the dark purple would look great... but honestly, when I first saw the rug (?) I thought that was the sashing/border. So, I'll vote with Kristin for the turquoise...

Great fabric choices! I love this set- it's going to be such an awesome gift! I agree with Kristin's comment about matching with the print second from bottom right- it's what my eyes were drawn to. But I also think pulling out the turquois would look neat too.

As it is a baby quilt I would back it with one of the animal prints..probably 3rd row with the blue giraffe and pink and purple ostriches/flamingos. The purple would look lovely as the binding. It is going to be a lovely little quilt for your niece!

I think turquoise also, it was my first instinct when I saw it. It's going to be so lovely!!

I'd go for aqua or lime green... but it's because is like things that pop :)

Looks great! :) Purple (like in the flower in the last row) would be pretty - but I think the turqouise would work well. Or maybe a deep gold/orange - from my screen it looks like every row features a little of that pretty gold/orange color; I think that would make for a very pretty binding too.

I love purple (favorite color!) but I would go with orange for the binding. And by the way, OH how I love Central Park!

This is going to be great when you get it finished. My favorite is the blue flowers in the middle of the second row from the bottom. And the orange version just below it too! I could have an entire quilt of just those two fabrics & be so happy!

I just discovered this fabric line...and I love it! I would prefer an aqua or lime border. Those are my favorite colors right now! What are you thinking for sashing?

oooh, I love this fabric! I think (like many others) that purple (1st on right, 2nd row from bottom right corner.) Or maybe even an orange? But my first choice would be that maroon/purple color. I can't wait to see the final project-I'm sure it will be adorable!

I love the layout! That is always the hardest part for me. I have to have my husband's help because I WAY overthink it...

I think a dark purple binding would be gorgeous. I'm a huge fan of the teal color, too, so I think that would also look great. :)

I like dark purple for the binding. I think Carol had a great idea to use the animal print for the backing, nice and fun for a baby quilt. You might also consider using a flannel for the backing to make it warmer- but I actually prefer all cotton quilts personally. That is such a cute line of fabrics, dang-it- would someone just let me win the lottery so I can buy all the fabrics I want?

I think I'd go with purple...it'd really make everything pop. Great color combo, by the way.

This fabric is GORGEOUS!

This is going to be a very treasured handmade gift. I completely agree with the comments re purple - purple is one of those colours that coordinates so well regardless of the shade.

PS thanks for sharing this WIP, and the links!

beautiful fabric! I love the layout and I think a deep purple would look great. But aqua is my favorite color so I think that would look great too! can't wait to see what you choose.

What a great collection of fabrics! Dark purple sounds good, but I also like matching the background of the turquoise in the second last row. I think I kinda like the cutting mat colour that's peeking through in places!

It looks great! What a lovely choice of present. I'll let you know when we have another baby. Ha!!

i like the dark purple choice but I guess you could pick up on any of the fabric colours in the fabric you've used. What colour is their nursery? You could use the wall colour from the room?

Adorable!!! I love the vibrant colors.

This is beautiful - and I vote a teal colour for the binding. If you look closely at your photo, you can just see the teal of the cutting board at the top and the bottom - that's the shade I mean !! I think it frames the quilt and makes the other colours, esp the purples, pop.

I am a new reader, and LOVIN' your work ! Thanks for the inspiration !
