Log Cabin Mug Rug - It's My Party Day 4

Welcome to the fourth day of It’s My Party and I’ll Craft if I Want To!

In case you're just joining us, Amy (from Ameroonie Designs) and I are celebrating our birthdays all week by sharing projects that we made just for us. Monday I shared my 241 tote bag, Tuesday my patchwork camera strap cover, and Wednesday my scrappy pin cushion. Today I’m sharing my log cabin mug rug...

I have wanted to make a log cabin quilt for about 12 years, but I lack the motivation to get serious about it. When I started planning out a mug rug, I decided to give the log cabin square a try. Inspired by this mug rug that I saw last fall on Fashioned by Meg, I came up with my design. The little lady in the middle came from an embroidery pattern found in the Doodle Stitching: The Motif Collection book in the Asian Chic section...

I always have trouble embroidering faces. I used French knots for the eyes, but I used fabric paint for the mouth and cheeks. The majority of the fabrics I used were scraps of Hunky Dory by Chez Moi for Moda. The black and white binding and the backing fabric came from fat quarters that I had kicking around. I even handstitched the binding, which is something I never do.

I love the way this turned out. I have a newfound love of embroidery. Will I be making a log cabin quilt anytime soon? Heck no! It took me forever to sew this one block. But I still love the log cabin pattern, and maybe one day I will get to the quilt.

Now click on over to Ameroonie Designs to see Amy’s project today, her super-amazing mixed media canvas

Make sure you come back tomorrow for the birthday week wrap up giveaway. You won’t want to miss it! Thanks for stopping by today!

  2. As soon as I saw the embroidery I knew where it was from! Don't you just love that book? Really pretty mug rug Gwen! A log cabin quilt definitely looks tedious but totally worth the effort especially if this is how your blocks will look.
