In case you're just joining us, Amy (from Ameroonie Designs) and I are celebrating our birthdays all week by sharing projects that we made just for us. Monday I shared my 241 tote bag, Tuesday my patchwork camera strap cover, and Wednesday my scrappy pin cushion. Today I’m sharing my log cabin mug rug...
I have wanted to make a log cabin quilt for about 12 years, but I lack the motivation to get serious about it. When I started planning out a mug rug, I decided to give the log cabin square a try. Inspired by this mug rug that I saw last fall on Fashioned by Meg, I came up with my design. The little lady in the middle came from an embroidery pattern found in the Doodle Stitching: The Motif Collection book in the Asian Chic section...
I always have trouble embroidering faces. I used French knots for the eyes, but I used fabric paint for the mouth and cheeks. The majority of the fabrics I used were scraps of Hunky Dory by Chez Moi for Moda. The black and white binding and the backing fabric came from fat quarters that I had kicking around. I even handstitched the binding, which is something I never do.
I love the way this turned out. I have a newfound love of embroidery. Will I be making a log cabin quilt anytime soon? Heck no! It took me forever to sew this one block. But I still love the log cabin pattern, and maybe one day I will get to the quilt.

Make sure you come back tomorrow for the birthday week wrap up giveaway. You won’t want to miss it! Thanks for stopping by today!

Oh, this will be so fun! And that "smiling" canvas of Amy's at the end...we LOVE Buddy the Elf!! :) Your mug rug is so cute. I'm going to send your blog link to my buddy who likes to make them to for inspiration. P.S. I love your blog name!
As soon as I saw the embroidery I knew where it was from! Don't you just love that book? Really pretty mug rug Gwen! A log cabin quilt definitely looks tedious but totally worth the effort especially if this is how your blocks will look.
This is my favorite mug rug yet. I hope you don't mind my copying your idea for myself to use in my sewing room. It is just so cute.
Gwen, the log cabin is cute...but the embroidery is fabulous! What fun.
Ok, this is way too nice to put a mug on it! You just can't cover that sweet little girl up! I hope you and Amy are having a fantastic week!
Such a sweet mug rug and the stitchery in the middle is so cute! Over to check the links now.
PS: i love the way you accented the stithery through the straight quilting on the log cabin!
really cute! You could make a bunch of these and give them as gifts.
DANG Gwen! I love the piecing you did on this! Gorgeous:)
so sweet, gwen. love that embroidered little one in the center there...
Adorable Gwen! I love log cabins too! Plus, you used those Hunky Dory scraps!
Hi Gwen..this is one of the prettiest items you've ever made..just love your embroidery too.
Great job on the embroidery - precious piece, are you really going to put your mug on it , or display it :)
You're little Asian lady is so cute! I definitely don't have the patience for embroidery...even though I really love the look of it!
OK, this is seriously THE cutest thing ever. I don't even drink coffee and I want to make one of these now!
